Osteopathy for Mothers
Pregnancy is a very physical and emotional experience and a time when women are more aware of the workings of their body. The mother has to gradually adapt to carrying an increasingly large weight and it can impose physical strain on organs and tissues around it. Pregnancy produces the largest postural change that a woman’s body will undergo.
Helping the expecting mother through pregnancy, after labour and the strains of carrying the baby.
For many years Osteopaths have used their skills to help ease the aches and pains caused by weight and posture changes during and after pregnancy. An Osteopathic examination can help identify physical limitations and strains in the mother’s body which may cause potential problems in the developing pregnancy, labour and delivery.
The safety of mother and baby is the Osteopath’s first concern. Following a thorough assessment and diagnosis, osteopathic treatment may help relieve the aches and pains caused by pregnancy.
Some common complaints that pre and post natal women suffer from and respond well to Osteopathic treatment:
- Low back, buttock and leg pain
- Neck and shoulder pain
- Discomfort around the thorax and indigestion
- Wrist problems
- Pubic or pelvic pain pre or post natal
Osteopaths often offer advice on posture and how to use your body correctly to decrease stresses and strains on your body. Treatment may also be supplemented by exercises and other forms of self help which the Osteopath may prescribe for the mother to do at home.
