Both Kath and Ramona trained at the London College of Sports Massage and are experienced therapists with an excellent knowledge of anatomy; they work closely with Osteopaths at Lexden Health bringing you the highest standards of professional care.
Sports massage aims to alleviate pain and to treat the underlying cause of the problem. The massage therapist restores normal function to the athlete through identification and release of contracted tissues. This can involve firm pressure & deep tissue of massage. Remedial massage is a similar type of massage concentrating on specific problem areas, e.g. the leg or the shoulder.
Marathon runners often receive regular massage as part of their overall maintenance to help relieve tension in overworked muscles before problems develop and to help maintain flexibility and reduce the risk of injuries. Both Kath and Ramona are currently treating runners in the London Marathon. For more information click here Sports Injury Clinic.
The following techniques are commonly used by our massage therapists:
- Myofascial Release - to mobilise fascia and trapped nerves
- Deep Tissue Massage - to release tension in muscles with restricted blood flow and reduced oxygenation
- Cross Fibre Friction - to release adhesions within muscles and between muscle groups
- Post Isometric Relaxation - an effective method of strengthening muscles to regain normal function and resting length
- Neuro Muscular Therapy - to identify areas of postural distortion and compensation
Sports massage techniques can also be used effectively with non athletes.
Trigger Point Massage
Another technique that is regularly used in Sports Massage Therapy is Trigger Point Massage. Myofascial trigger points are palpable, irritable muscle lesions usually within tight muscle bands that refer pain to other areas when pressure is applied. Trigger points are caused by stress and strain exerted through muscles, be it habitual postural stress, or the stress of physical or emotional trauma.
Treatment of trigger points consists of identifying the trigger points through palpation, followed by manual compression to remove excess metabolic waste and cross fibre friction to unstick adjacent muscle fibers.
Can I have a massage if I'm pregnant?
Yes - massage can be a great support during pregnancy and is quite safe from the second trimester. It can help with alleviating back pain, tired/heavy legs, neck and shoulder pains, leg cramps, insomnia, varicose veins, oedema and emotional stress, all of which are often associated with pregnancy.
The massage is performed in a position most comfortable for you, usually in a side lying position with extra pillows and cushioning to support the body.
Not sure what massage treatment to have?
No problem - your therapist will individually tailor your treatment, combining techniques to give you the maximum benefit from your massage.
